Tanzania has entered into an agreement with Uganda to help in the search for oil in the Eyasi Wembere Basin and Lake Tanganyika. The two countries already have a crude pipeline deal. Orca Exploration Group operates one licence in Tanzania which comprises two blocks known as the Discovery Blocks. Crude Oils Currently the country is producing no crude oil, but has natural gas production as well as potential for further natural gas development. The first natural gas discovery in Tanzania was made in 1974 on the Songo Songo Island (Lindi Region) followed by a second discovery at the Mnazi Bay (Mtwara Region) in 1982. Natural gas was discovered both offshore and onshore the Songo Songo Island, while the gas discovery at Mnazi Bay was only offshore. But the potential upside here is 3.8 trillion cubic feet, or $11 billion in gas. Dar es Salaam — Tanzania Petroleum Development Corporation (TPDC) will start an advanced search for oil in Lake Tanganyika, the state-owned firm said at the weekend. From its first stages of surveys across Lake Tanganyika waters, TPDC believes the area from Kigoma Rural, Kigoma Ujiji, Uvinza and Mpanda Rural contains abundant oil resources.
